Workshops Abstracts

A, Integrating Skills in the Classroom- By Peter Lucantoni

Abstract

This workshop will begin with an overview of what the different language skills are, and look at the various sub-skills which language users need to use when faced with different communication situations. Teachers will consider what integrating language skills in the classroom actually means in practical terms, and look at alternatives to this approach.  There will be an opportunity to think about the advantages and disadvantages for everyone involved of both an integrated skills approach to teaching and learning, and other approaches.  Finally, teachers will have the chance to put into practice their thoughts by outlining an integrated skills lesson.

B. Communicative Learner-Centered Grammar- By Peter Lucantoni

Abstract

‘Teaching grammar’ has become something of a negative phrase in this age of communicative language teaching, but what is the place of grammar today?  David Nunan (1991) says ‘grammar enables us to “mean”’, so how important is it?  This workshop will discuss the importance of grammar, and discuss ways in which we can make our teaching of grammar more effective. Furthermore, we will look at some fun, communicative learner-centred grammar activities.

For the workshops during the week, he will be delivering a session on Group Work, abstract below:

This workshop considers the importance of group work in terms of communicative language teaching, and also discusses some of the reasons why teachers may shy away from group work activities, particularly in monolingual, monocultural contexts. Different group work activities will be discussed, and there will be opportunities for teachers to try out various tasks, including jigsaw activities, all of which involve working in groups.

C. Projects and portfolios: promoting practical and purposeful language learning within and beyond the ELT classroom

By Andrew Johnson

Objective: for groups of teachers to prepare project and / or portfolio work during the seminar that they will try out with their students during the current school term

·       Materials and examples to be provided, to cater for both teachers who teach English as a 1st foreign language and those who teach English as a 2nd foreign language

·       Materials and examples to be provided to cater for teachers of all levels, from KG to Grade 12

·       Participants will be invited to share anecdotes about relevant teaching experiences with one another, and may bring along relevant examples to share with colleagues if they wish

·       The seminars will vary in detail according to the requirements of particular groups of participants, but they will all broadly follow this outline:

1.      Examples from several different grade levels from KG to Grade 12

2.      Sharing ideas and experiences

3.      Group work: participants who teach the same or similar grade levels work together in groups of 3-5 to prepare portfolio and/or project work to try out with their students during the current school term
